We love to party in the parking lot. For real. We haven't even put in a patio at home. We just drag lawn chairs and a grill into our driveway. The neighbors don't care for it, either. So we had a great time at Richmond Animal League's Picnic in the Parking Lot. We were having so much fun, we forgot to get any pictures. We lifted this picture from RAL's Facebook feed. The picnic was the grand finale for RAL's calendar contest. We sold biscuits and mini muffins for last minute donations. We gave out ham tidbits to dogs. In total, online and in the parking lot, we collected donations from 12 different donors. We even won the raffle! A high point for sure, as we took home some RAL sweatpants. But the best part was saying hello to new pets and people. It keeps the pups well balanced. Us, too. At home, when it is time for a house guest or the UPS man to swing by, it is no biggie. Cause we have partied down with hounds, kids, pitbullies, and strangers in the parking lot with a sack of ham.
Richmond Animal League is having a fundraising event. I've entered Molly and Lucy in the contest. Donors vote for their favorite picture. $1= 1 vote. The top 12 get to be in the 2016 RAL Calendar. Pets that raise $100 will have their picture featured in the back of the calendar, too. My goal is to have 5 donors vote for my pups. The amount doesn't matter. A link to their page can be found here. If you don't want to donate online, you can call the shelter directly, and they will add your donation to my page. And don't worry, I won't talk fundraising again until 2016.
Last winter, we bought a painting from Richmond Animal League's tiny art auction. It's actually the nicest painting in our home. The painter is Carolyn Hietala. there is a striking resemblance to our new Molly girl. How nice, when life follows art. Also, Molly's gotcha picture reminds me of our previous RAL dog's adoption day picture. There have been a few flashes of sadness, as we think back to our time with Gracie. We did not seek out a dog who looked so similar. But we were not going to pass her over just because she looks like our deceased dog. Plus, who could pass up that face?
An interstate adoption attempt had failed. "And why aren't we adopting locally, anyways?" he asked.
"Because Richmond Animal League never has little girl dog-sisters. I've looked for months." I sighed. We knew we wanted two small, mature dogs with short coats. One need a black coat and the other should be tan, or any passable biscuit color. This was so we could name them Biscuit and Molasses, aka Molly. I pulled up RAL's website to show him. "Look, I check it almost every day. There ares only beagles* and...oh..wait. They actually have them! There is a bonded pair named Peanut and Popcorn. But they are clearly a Biscuit and a Molly!" We put in an application immediately. Richmond Animal League was in contact within the hour, and we were set to meet the next day. These little old ladies were surrendered in terrible physical shape. But more about that later. For Now, Huzzah! We took them home that night. We now have a Biscuit and a Molasses, or Molly, for short. *Beagles are lovely pets; we just happen to prefer teeny dogs for ourselves. Also, RAL doesn't just hand out dogs will-nilly. We had adopted with them before, and have a multi-year relationship with this rescue group. |
